The hysteria of Diego’s presentation as a Napoli player on Jwould only enhance this feeling. There had been hunger strikes and people had chained themselves to the fence at San Paolo stadium, begging me to come. A lot of things reminded me of my origins. “Naples was a crazy city – they were as crazy as me – soccer was life itself. “I felt that they loved me, that they really and truly loved me,” he revealed in his autobiography, ‘Touched by God’. All together, they helped make up the difference and the deal was done. ![]() The Neapolitan people responded by making collections in the streets – from the notoriously crowded tenements of the Spanish Quarter to the Camorra-run district of Forcella. ![]() This became clear to Maradona when, despite Juliano agreeing a world-record fee to sign the Argentine, Barcelona president Josep Lluis Nunez moved the goalposts at the last minute by demanding an extra £500,000 for the deal to go through. A legend during 15 years as a player with his hometown club, Juliano rather prophetically told Maradona he would become a “living God” if he joined the Partenopei – and that his people would die for him. The man who travelled to Barcelona to negotiate Maradona’s signing, Napoli sporting director Antonio Juliano, was from the slums of Naples himself. “I want to become the idol of the poor children of Naples because they are like I was when I lived in Buenos Aires,” El Pibe de Oro would say on his first day as a player there. It was a dysfunctional, downtrodden, yet hugely passionate city – particularly when it came to football – that suffered from mass poverty, unemployment and organised crime, and was depicted as a stain on Italy by the aristocratic, industrial north. In Naples, he would find a team, city and public that endured the same problems as he did growing up. During his two years in Spain’s fiercely separatist Barcelona he had been made to feel an outcast, branded by locals as a ‘ Sudaca’ – a derogatory term for a dark-skinned South American. His former club – and that of his heart in Argentina – Boca Juniors were the team of the working class who battled against the team of the upper class, River Plate. Maradona would always side with the poor and the oppressed throughout his life. Maradona’s bricklayer father Don Diego went to work at 4am each day and, in the words of his son, “arrived home dead”. As Asif Kapadia’s much-anticipated film on Maradona – June 14 in the UK and July 25 in Australia – shows in graphic detail, there was no clean water, no paved roads and the impoverished residents had to labour around the clock just to survive. He had grown up in extreme poverty in Villa Fiorito, an overpopulated shantytown in the suburbs of Buenos Aires. But, above all else, there was unconditional love that – 35 years on from their first date together – has never wavered.įrom day one, Diego immediately felt at home in Naples. There were so many blissful highs yet also some distressing lows. None more so than Diego Armando Maradona and SSC Napoli. This article talks about a number of things you could (and should) do to ensure your live performance happens reliably, and that your live rig remains performant and fit for purpose.įor an introduction to this please see my other blog. The main fundamental difference between MainStage and a DAW like Logic Pro is it’s intended use in live performance. ![]() While church organists are quite happy with a huge delay between hitting a key and hearing the sound your average pit musician is not, and certainly a more responsive keyboard is important when playing with an ensemble. Other problems that can occur that are harder to diagnose include: In short - you’ll know! The first indicator will be sluggish performance from the keyboard, and sometimes everything can be fine until you add just one more plugin and BAM! 1/4 second delay on the keyboard.breaking up of sound, or even missing sounds on some keys.notes cutting off before the tail has ended. The first thing to consider is the basics of how computers work. Unless you’re controlling external synth hardware (which you can in MainStage) you will need some CPU grunt. Depending on the virtual instruments you are using the amount of CPU grunt you need will change, so some research into the best plugins for live use is a good idea. If you are careful you can get away with a fairly modest CPU, such as the i5 in the older Mac Mini, but you do need to make sure you have enough RAM to hold samples. MainStage loads samples into memory for a fast response time, so a full theatre concert file can run at 4–8Gb RAM. ![]() The CPU does maths and moves things around in RAM - so you need enough RAM to hold all that, and enough CPU to do all the maths. The less maths and less moving around the better, of course, and it’s not always obvious what counts as “all the maths”. For instance, Modartt’s Pianoteq is modelled, not sampled, and you’d think it was quite CPU heavy but for some reason it’s not. Whereas a really good convolution reverb will definitely give your CPU a workout. One other important point here - as well as generating audio output from this maths it is the CPU’s job to move data around to work on it. The number one reason for apparently poor CPU performance is actually too little RAM. Typical view of memory pressure from OSX’ Activity Monitor tool When your computer runs low on RAM the Operating System (OSX in this case) starts to do some actually pretty clever stuff to free up memory. ![]() Here we can see that 2.84Gb of RAM is “compressed”. This means that OSX thinks I’ve not used it for a while, but the application that created it is still running. So it compresses it, and if the application comes back and needs it again it will uncompress it. In general this is fine, and you don’t even know it’s happening. But on a theatre rig that is doing nothing else you really don’t want OSX to be doing this, so it’s essential you have enough RAM for the things you’re doing, or you’ll be losing CPU cycles to compressing / uncompressing data rather than processing it. I would recommend a mid to upper range processor and at least 8Gb RAM. My theatre rig was, for years, an i5 Mac Mini with 8Gb RAM, only recently upgraded to an i7 Mac Mini with 16Gb RAM due to a couple of shows that had massive concert files.ĭisclaimer - I am still on Intel Mac and haven’t yet moved to the new generation of Apple Silicon, where higher performance with less RAM may reduce the hardware requirement. The internal sound cards are noisy, and you really don’t want your WhatsApp notification sound played out over the theatre FoH speakers because you forgot to mute them! Most importantly is whether you’re using a laptop, a mac mini or a fully loaded Mac Pro you need an external sound card. The cheapest way of doing this effectively is something like the Behringer UCA222, which is around £20 from a number of retailers. It has RCA phono outs, which any decent sound technician should be able to work with. ![]() ![]() ![]() So can a breakdown in the coordination between the upper and lower chambers. Other sources. They have a square head and can seem imposing and fearful but their eyes give them away. The Boxer is a medium-sized, short-haired, muscular dog, with a squarely proportioned body. The modern-day Boxer ranks in the top 10 most popular dog breeds in the USA for many years in a row. There were problems at the beginning since the members of the Club could not agree on the breeds standard and it took them over 3 years to decide which traits and characteristics should be desirable and promoted. The American Boxer Club started its work in 1935 and was immediately accepted by the American Kennel Club. Soon this breed became popular across the country and became a favorite show dog, family pet, and even a guard dog. ![]() The biggest rise in popularity for this breed happened after the end of World War II when US soldiers returned from Europe with these dogs as their mascots. The modern breed played a big role in the military efforts in World War I and was mostly used as messengers, carriers, attacking, and guarding dogs. Unfortunately, there weren’t many female Boxers in the US, and Sieger ended up not having a big influence on the breed as we know it today. In 1915 the American Kennel Club crowned the first Boxer champion by the name of Sieger Dampf v Dom who was owned by the Governor of New York and his wife. The Boxer breed became popular across Europe at the very end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century and soon, first Boxers were imported to the US. The breeders' names were Roberth, Konig, and Hopner. In 1894, German dog breeders decided to standardize the breed and they entered their dogs in the 1895 Munich dog show and a year after that, they helped in creating the Boxer Club. A famous canine historian called John Wagner wrote a book called “The Boxer” in 1939 and he claims that most of the big show dog winners and praised modern Boxers can be tracked to Meta von der Passage. She was bred with one of the grandsons of Lechner’s Box and produced a puppy called Meta von der Passage and she is considered to be the mother of the modern-day Boxer breed. That show had a specialty event only for Boxers and Flocki achieved an overwhelming victory.įlocki's sister was a white puppy that is considered today to have the most influence on the development of the modern breed. Flocki was the first dog ever to be registered in the German studbook but it wasn’t until he won a dog show held in Munich. That female was then bred to an English Bulldog and they produced a dog called Flocki. The German cynology authorities accepted her and registered her as “Bierboxer”. Lechner’s Box was inbred with his mother and their breeder produced a female puppy called Alt’s Schecken. The litter that came to life had a small fawn-colored male that was named Lechner’s Box and he is believed to be the first influence of the modern Boxer breed.
