When sufficient training examples are available, we find that our model achieves similar performance on both the well-known and novel datasets and statistically significantly outperforms a baseline Hidden Markov Model. In the months prior to the completion of this thesis, a large number of new, fully-labelled datasets have been released to the research community, meaning that the generalisation potential of models may be tested. This performance is realised by the introduction of a novel Dynamic Bayesian Net- work and chromagram feature vector, which concurrently recognises chords, keys and bass note sequences on a set of songs by The Beatles, Queen and Zweieck. In this thesis we introduce a machine learning based automatic chord recognition algorithm that achieves state of the art performance. As previously obscure genres, which tend to use insects more, become more popular (witness the rise of Rap music), it is possible that even more insect songs will be heard on the airwaves. As Hogue (1987) cites only eight insect songs from traditional or classical music, the results of this study suggest that rock music has utilized insects to a much greater extent, although the percentage of the total is small. Little biological information is provided by insect music, the most common exceptions being metamorphosis and curious methods of insect control. Overall, insects in music have been used to great effect in eliciting humor, especially the dark and twisted kind, and occasionally to address deeper issues. Popular music, however, has more participants (artists) and titles (albums and tracks) than the other media, perhaps allowing a broader range of expression of attitudes toward insects. Not surprisingly, these applications are similar to those found among films and cartoons. Hymenopterans are the insects most commonly cited, probably because they have both charming qualities and painful associations, such as stinging. Lepidoptera probably are well represented because of the beauty of butterflies and moths and Diptera for the negative hygienic associations of flies, maggots and mosquitoes. Insects have been used for a diversity of effects in rock music but primarily for their appealing qualities and for shock value. Dead Letter ServiceĪs mentioned in the last blog post, we wrote a simple script, which requeues the messages of the dead-letter queue, but because backend developers usually try to automate things, we wrote this new service to get rid of the script and the manual step. So we decided to improve that and write our own small service to deal with dead letters. Also, requeueing a dead letter in a specific queue is not possible in that interface. Since the RabbitMQ management interface is a very basic overview of some statistics about RabbitMQ, only showing the headers and the encoded payload of the queued dead letters without any ordering or grouping, it is pretty hard to get the information about which messages are currently in the dead letter queue. As some time has passed already, I am happy to announce that we actually improved handling that quite a bit. This post already gave insights in our current way of manually cleaning up that dead letter queue, and it contains some hints about a more sophisticated handling of dead letters. Most recently in this series, I have described how we handle dead letters with the dead letter exchange. In my previous posts about the message bus, I wrote about using RabbitMQ for decoupling our service s and how we defined our message content, followed by an explanation of how we keep our receivers fast and resilien t. Written by Martin Führlinger, Lead Engineer Backend Introduction The Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing and International Drag Racing Hall of Fame is open every day from 9am-5pm. The Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing is located at 13700 SW 16th Ave, Ocala, Florida, just off Interstate 75. There are some beautiful classic cars and hot rods in the collection. The development of the top fuel and other racing engines is chronicled in the engine room with a collection of complete engines and parts.Īnd if race cars and drag racing is not your thing, there is a large classic and antique car collection of cars owned by Garlits and donated to the museum. This is one of my favorites, the wedge body dragsters.Īnd another of my favorites, Jungle Jim Liberman's funny car. The museum collection contains many other famous and iconic cars including multiple Don "The Snake" Prudhome cars. The accident set Garlits on the path to develop a safer race car, placing the engine in back, behind the driver, and the modern drag racing machine was born. The "accident car".Garlits last front engine "slingshot" style dragster which suffered a freak clutch explosion that sawed the car in half, taking the front half of Garlits foot as well. Swamp Rat 6" The Wynnsjammer" was campaigned 1964-65 and first top fuel car to officially run faster then 200 mph. From the humble start of the sport, in cars only some one out of their mind would get into, to the modern 300 mph plus professional drag racing world, the whole story is here, told by the ever evolving machines themselves.Īnd most of Garlits "Swamp Rat" cars are om "1" to "34" and many of the experimental versions as well. Im in charge of all the major functions of the museum on a day to day basis. It was an amazingly exciting time as men pushed machines to go 200 mph in the standing start quarter mile. If you grew up in the 60s and 70s, you knew about drag racing because of the high profile sponsorships of the likes of Don "The Snake" Prudhome and Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen. And it turns out Garlits is also quite a pack rat and collector of cars, tools, motors, fire suits, racing memorabilia and his collection is huge.Ībout 300 cars in the collection spanning the history of the automobile as well as the first 50 years of drag racing as an organized sport. If you are a drag racing fan you already know that Top Fuel racing wouldn't be what it is today without the endless inovation of "Big Daddy" Don Garlits. The museum is well worth the time and admission as the collection is fabulous. Mrs Armadilloman and I are on our way to the 2019 NHRA Gartornationals in Gainseville and decided to spend the afternoon 45 minutes farther down the road in Ocala Florida and tour The Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing. I will say it up front. This place is amazing. I think this sort of collaborative atmosphere really brings home the idea that, however absurd things are, the residents of Snacktooth are a community. But that’s one way our naivete can be a strength, because seeing them all play off of each other’s energy was wonderful. It turns out this is pretty uncommon for games to do, especially with a cast this large. It took a lot of restraint not to geek out around so many industry icons gathered into one place! And speaking of, we managed to put them all in a room together for some ensemble recordings (pre-pandemic, thankfully). We’re thrilled to be working with them, and even more thrilled to finally introduce them to you in the video below. We were overjoyed (and overwhelmed) to get thousands of auditions, hundreds per character! After weeks of re-listening, and passionate internal debates (our usual process), we arrived at our awesome cast. With their help, we put together audition sides that captured each character’s most iconic lines, across the broadest spectrum of emotion. We enlisted the help of Brightskull for casting, voice directing, and even audio mastering. On Octodad: Dadliest Catch we handled auditions and voice direction ourselves, but Bugsnax was shaping up to be much bigger in scope with a cast of at least 15! Stumbling through the process, we realized that we lacked experience. I’m also very excited to talk a bit about our journey into finding the amazing voice cast of Bugsnax! We knew early on that we wanted a fully voiced game to truly get across all the things that make our characters funny, unique, and tragically relatable. Today I’m excited to announce that Bugsnax will be available for PS4 and PS5 on November 12 with the launch of the new console! A tiny notepad in your back pocket or day pack is a great organizer, reminder, and communication aid. I like to rip out appropriate chapters from guidebooks and staple them together, or use special slide-on laminated book covers. Pack the travel info you’ll need on the ground (or download it into your ereader). Bring any necessary contact info if you have health or travel insurance. In your luggage, pack a record of all reservations (print out your hotel confirmation emails). Photocopies and a couple of passport-type photos can help you get replacements more quickly if the originals are lost or stolen. Bring your passport plane, train, and rental car documents or vouchers driver’s license and any other useful cards (student ID, hostel membership card, and so on). Bring your preferred mix of a debit card, a credit card, and an emergency stash of hard US cash (in $20 bills).ĭocuments. Get a lightweight one with a low-profile color (I like beige). You could lose everything except your money belt, and the trip could still go on. This flat, hidden, zippered pouch - worn around your waist (or like a necklace) and tucked under your clothes - is essential for the peace of mind it brings. Comfy streetwear - such as shorts, leggings, T-shirts, tank tops, yoga pants, and other lightweight athletic gear - can be used as pajamas, post-dinner loungewear, and a modest cover-up to get you to the bathroom down the hall. To use public pools, you’ll need a swimsuit (men can’t just wear shorts and in France, men need to wear Speedo-type swimsuits - not swim trunks). For instant respectability, bring anything lightweight that can break the monotony and make you look snazzy. (For summer travel, I wing it without rain gear - but always pack for rain in Britain and Ireland.) A hooded jacket of Gore-Tex or other waterproof material is good if you expect rain. Neutral colors used to look more European than bright ones, but now everything from azure blue to pumpkin orange has made its way into European wardrobes. Bring a light and water-resistant windbreaker with a hood. Warm and dark is best - for layering and dressing up. Whichever shoes you bring, make sure they are well broken in before you leave home. Flip-flops are handy if you’ll be using bathrooms down the hall. For a second pair, consider sandals in summer. Sturdy, low-profile tennis shoes with a good tread are fine, too. Mephisto, Ecco, and Rieker look dressier and more European than sneakers, but are still comfortable. Bring one pair of comfortable walking shoes with good traction. Bamboo or cotton/nylon-blend socks dry faster than 100 percent cotton, which lose their softness when air-dried. Shorts can double as a swimsuit for men when swimming in lakes or the sea. If you bring shorts, one pair is probably enough. Button-down wallet pockets are safest (though still not nearly as thief-proof as a money belt). While not especially stylish, they’re functional in Italy, where you can use them to cover up inside churches while still beating the heat outside. Many travelers like lightweight convertible pants/shorts with zip-off legs. Jeans can be too hot for summer travel (and are slow to dry). Bring two pairs: one lightweight cotton and another super-lightweight pair for hot and muggy big cities. Synthetic-blend fabrics (such as Coolmax or microfiber) often dry overnight. Look for a wrinkle-camouflaging pattern or blended fabrics that show a minimum of wrinkles. Shirts with long sleeves that roll up easily can double as short-sleeved. Bring up to five short-sleeved or long-sleeved shirts or blouses (how many of each depends on the season) in a cotton/polyester blend. Google Maps uses Fawn Creek Township within Montgomery County as the zero-mile point of the United States. Western portions of the county contain parts of the northern Cross Timbers eco-region, which separates the forested eastern portion of the United States with the Plains. The lowest point in the state of Kansas is located on the Verdigris River in Cherokee Township in Montgomery County (just southeast of Coffeyville), where it flows out of Kansas and into Oklahoma. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 651 square miles (1,690 km 2), of which 644 square miles (1,670 km 2) is land and 8.0 square miles (21 km 2) (1.2%) is water. Įarly in 1869, however, settlers began to cross the Verdigris River, "at first under protest of the Indians, but the immense throng of settlers soon made all protests futile." Montgomery County was surveyed and organized in 1869 the governor appointed commissioners June 3. Like the Osages, the Bunkers thought they were beyond the boundaries of civilization. In 1867 Frank and Fred Bunker established a primitive cattle camp on the west side of the Verdigris south of the confluence. From the west the Elk River joins the Verdigris at a confluence slightly northwest of the geographical center of the county. The Verdigris flows from north to south through the center of Montgomery County. įor a brief time, the Osages attempted to maintain a boundary at the Verdigris River. This treaty conceded white settlement on land in the eastern part of what is now Montgomery County. As early as 1866, the Osages were forced to cede tracts at the eastern and northern edges of the reservation. After the Civil War ended, the Osage lands were coveted as the largest and last reserve of good land in the eastern part of the state. The reservation had been established in 1825. When Kansas was admitted to the Union as a state in 1861, the Osage Indian reservation occupied a large tract of land near the southern border. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, in Canada, after successfully capturing two forts and the city of Montreal. Montgomery County was established on February 26, 1867. In 1854, the Kansas Territory was organized, then in 1861 Kansas became the 34th U.S. In 1803, most of the land for modern day Kansas was acquired by the United States from France as part of the 828,000 square mile Louisiana Purchase for 2.83 cents per acre. In 1802, Spain returned most of the land to France, but keeping title to about 7,500 square miles. In 1762, after the French and Indian War, France secretly ceded New France to Spain, per the Treaty of Fontainebleau. From the 16th century to 18th century, the Kingdom of France claimed ownership of large parts of North America. For many millennia, the Great Plains of North America was inhabited by nomadic Native Americans. |
